CONSTANT, Nuria Evelyn September 1, 1946 July 26, 2010 Nuria and Nora shared 23 years together. Her final two weeks in Hospice was an inspirational, articulate journey. We were supported by the caring energy of all those who crossed our path. Please come celebrate her birthday Wednesday, Sept. 1 from 3-7 p.m. in Victoria. Friends and family across Canada, Hawaii and the U.S. mainland will also party that day. I will let Nuria have the last word. "Don't let yesterday use up too much of today"

LEE, Mickey September 9, 1949 August 21, 2010 Mickey passed away in the early hours of August 21, 2010 from liver cancer. She is survived by Jackie, her partner of 23 years, and her chosen family of friends. She lived the time following her diagnosis with a grace and courage that was inspirational to those around her. Despite the violence and other challenges of her childhood, Mickey grew to become a warm and loving adult with a great sense of humour, a deep spirituality and a strong commitment to her friendships. Mickey was born in Souris, Manitoba and attended the University of Regina, graduating in 1972 with an Education degree. She taught high school in Regina and worked as a manager for BC Housing in Vancouver before attending the West Coast College of Massage Therapy in 1987. She practiced as a Registered Massage Therapist in Vancouver and on Salt Spring Island until 2006 work that she loved and for which she had an amazing gift. She retired to Victoria in 2006. At her request, there will be no funeral. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in her memory to the Victoria Hospice Foundation.

The VLSCS Board would like to thank both Paula Miles and Linda Swanton for their enthusiastic interest, genuine committment and time served on the 2008-2009 Board of Directors. They have both resigned to fullfill other responsibilities. We know how difficult it can be at times to balance work and volunteer commitments and we appreciated their involvement. On behalf of the VLSCS membership, we would like to offer a sincere thanks and wish them every success in the future.
At this time, we would like to invite those women who are interested in joining a dynamic and forward thinking group of dedicated volunteers to consider becoming a Director of VLSCS. If you are interested or would like more information about this opportunity to make a difference please contact Sue Anderson, by sending an email to info@VLSCS.ca |

Mature lesbian community finds friends, family at James Bay centre gatherings
A place for support and acceptance
Katherine Dedyna, Times Colonist
Published: Thursday, January 17, 2008
Whether it's Friday nights for female-themed movies or Wednesday noon hours for coffee, the welcome mat comes out for local lesbians almost 125 times a year at the James Bay New Horizons Centre.
The gatherings are sponsored by the Victoria Lesbian Seniors Care Society, but women who love women don't have to be seniors to join in. Socialization is the main event, but shoring up social supports for the future -- when older lesbians are less likely to have them -- is increasingly a part of the game plan.
Patti Parkyn, left, and Mare Lane are both members of the Victoria Lesbian Seniors Care Society, which sponsors movie and coffee gatherings at the James Bay New Horizons Centre.
